A Sordid Poppy - The Holy Sides CD 10,99 euro (Label: Brouillard Définitif)

In the early 90s, two brothers and few school mates decided to form «A Sordid Poppy» refering to Siouxsie's «Poppy Days» and Babel 17 «A Sordid Waste». Their music is always a bit cold but still with some « touching-pop » elements as well as experimental, complex and  (then) modern elements. The lyrics are nicely arranged, sometimes surrealistic,  sometimes haughty, but always terribly decadent ! Their influences are easy to identify, as for exemple The Cure, Mecano, And Also The Trees, Minimal Compact and especially Bauhaus. The tracks on this CD are taken from the demo tapes « Dehiscence » and « Red Cloud Sessions » + one unreleased track. Thanks to these tracks, at last, we can discover some more about this Alsatian band, unrecognized in France, but so familiar for the elders that have have known the "Great East" and its small alternative scene.

Blacklist - Midnight of the Century CD 14,99€ (Wierd Records)

The long awaited debut album from NYC's Blacklist is finally available. Grandiose guitars sustain and reverberate throughout each track, iconicly evoking the The Cult, The Mission and The Chameleons. They've got the benefit of great production quality to really bring out the sound to give it the polish it deserves. With the guitars in the forefront, the bass is superbly thick and mortars it all together for a rock solid rhythm foundation. The lyrics provide a visual and emotive view of a dramatic and violent world of oppression and revolution, striving to reach out and attain enlightenment. Maybe I'm waxing too much there, but the lyrics are that descriptive,  filmily romantic.
'Midnight of the Century' includes updated versions of both the previously released singles "Shock In The Hotel Falcon" and "Language Of The Living Dead". The hit of the album seems to be upbeat and star-reaching "Flight of the Demoiselles" by well-established rock sources like SPIN and The Village Voice, but the more brooding and dark cloud-rumbling "Odessa" strikes me better. While 'Midnight' might be a little too bright and not Wierd enough for some tastes, it certainly serves as a gateway for the oldschool gothrock fans into the modern age, and the modern age into the oldschool gothic fake-fog filled dancehalls.

BlankDogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks or bedspreads, but that's fine. The aura of anonymity allows you to focus on the sounds -- and, really, he might be releasing a ton of things, but there's definitely a higher jam to crap ratio. It's like Joy Division vocal lines with the Cure's synth and guitar melodies filtered through ancient submerged keyboards and eroded recording equipment.

Carmody - A Better Spider CD 14,99€ (Label: Anna Logue Records)

Carmody were Andrea Lesmo (synthesisers, tapes, bass, guitar) and Alberto Ramella (vocals) with the some help from Massimiliano Casacci (guitar - member of Deafear and nowadays in Subsonica and running the Casasonica Studios) at the later stage of their existence. They came from Torino, Italy, and were mates of Monuments and Chromagain, also following a similar musical path with predominant synthesisers and drum machines (Boss DR-55, Korg KPR-77, Roland TR-909) along with some sparse guitars. They recorded from 1981 to 1985 and issued three incredibly rare demo tapes. “A Better Spider” compiles the best tracks from those tapes, bringing you some of the best electropop/electrowave music ever coming out of Italy. CARMODY would have so deserved to reach a wider audience, especially the later stage tracks have had much potential to become small hits, and then “Messengers of Love” is definitely one most wonderful tracks ever recorded. There is no chance you shall miss out on this one if you are into stuff like Monuments or early 80’s electronic wave music in general.

The Cemetary Girlz - Smoke My Brain CD 9,99 euro (Label: Manic Depression)

The Cemetary Girlz are getting more and more recognition as a live band, but here now comes their official debut cd. “Smoke My Brain” is a pure new-wave album in the purest 80s tradition. When listening to their composition I got several big names The Cure, The Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus and Virgin Prunes that came into mind. Especially the guitar play is a pure emulation of the 80s new-wave spirit. Little Spigaou is the name of the guitarist and he’s a real genius musician in this type of music. The guitar parts are for sure the main characteristic of this Parisian band. It’s a pure pleasure for all lovers of the 80s guitar-wave. The vocals are less classical as they’ve been treated with a kind of effect on top, creating a dark feeling. The Cemetary Girlz avoid all innovation, but they for sure will bring a lot of good-old memories back to life. Songs like “Sarabanda”, “Chimères” and “Le Masque/Le Visage” are excellent pieces of music. A few songs were sung in French, but the majority of the songs have been sung in English. It’s now all about the question to know if this band can still be successful in the sale of their album!

Central Unit - Central Unit + Loving Machinery CD 13,99 euro (Label MP Records, 2003) 

Central Unit is a italian new wave band born in 1980 in Bologna. They release an ep, Loving Machinery in 1982, which contained the hit "Saturday Nite", and a Tuxedomoon cover (What's use?). And a Tuxedomoon member, Peter Principle, was the one who co-produced their selftitled lp in 1983. Their debut ep is now one of the most wanted records for minimal synth collectors worldwide. In 2003 MP Records released this cd which  gathers all the tracks from this two wonderful releases. A great occasion to discover the music of this great bandl band. 14 wonderful tracks, romantic and glacial melodies. Minimal synth meets coldwave. Simply great!

After an absence of seven years CLAIR OBSCUR was reactivated in November 2004 by the two founding members, Christophe Demarthe (vocals) and Nicolas Demarthe (guitar). From most tribal cold wave to chamber music, from industrial music to dance music (unless these two are synonymous), their musical approach eminently atmospheric embraces a surprising variety of styles and gives birth to iconoclast scenic transcriptions.

From Killing Joke to The Nits, from the Cirque d'Hiver de Paris (1982) to the Wiener Festwochen (1991), the bands with which they played on the same venues and the places where they performed tell well the richness of this group which is impossible to classify.

Cultural Decay existed from 1980-1982. The band’s collective discography is comprised of a highly sought after 7" single and two song 12" EP. The latter was produced and features additional accompaniment by future Revolting Cocks co-founder Luc Van Acker. The band played a total of 15 gigs in local clubs—with like minded Belgian acts such as Struggler, De Brassers, and Siglo XX—before disbanding.

Eight Ways To Start a Day is the first official release in close to three decades from this fabled Belgian coldwave band. Their sound, a collision of ethereal one-note synth lines and dark post-punk aggression, recalls the controlled ferocity of Crisis and The Southern Deathcult at their best. The recordings on these releases comprise the band’s entire recorded output and both the LP and CD include an extensive booklet including photos, liner notes and a comprehensive band history from member Joseph V.

The CD boasts those three plus an additional five tracks culled from previously unheard recordings and demos including “Womb,” “Sink or Swim,” “Out of Balance,” “Losing Height,” and a live version of “End of the Corridor.”

True UFO in the French scene, Danse Macabre is born of the reunion of Philippe Huart and and Louis Thévenon, co-leader of New Rose and future former of side-label Lively Art. Danse Macabre is composed of Louis Thévenon (drums), Philippe Huart (bass-guitar, guitars), Claude Lamamy (voice and various instruments), Patrick Blain (Charles de Goal main member, voice, bass-guitar and guitar), Philippe Ross (ex-C.O.M.A.) and Pearl Cholley (voice and choirs). The result – six tracks mostly improvised, craddled of experimental sonorities and oscillating between Bauhaus, Public Image Limited and Christian Death – is of exceptionnal quality. Danse Macabre (1983) opens on the powerfull Crucifixation, a “jam” around the Bauhaus Stigmata Martyr. It follows with very experimental tracks, arranged by Patrick Woindrich, including the excellent Tryptique, kind of gothic black mass written by Claude Lamamy. Born of an spontaneous artistical need Danse Macabre will disappear as quickly as it appeared, leaving this only 12”EP to posterity. Today high priced in records fairs, the Danse Macabre record stays not less than one of the French gothic scene masterpiece.

Pavia, Northern Italy, 1981. — From the ashes of Doctor Mabuse, protagonists of incendiary concerts of which no trace remains, came Dark Tales. Authors of three demotapes, they also appeared on numerous compilations of the period, including the now beyond rare “First Relation.” Distorted vocals, futuristic sounding keyboards and clean sounding guitars. All inserted in a new wave atmosphere made less sinister by a tight rhythm section always at the forefront, but never obsessive. Then in 1985, the end, due to exhaustion, lack of funding, and stupidity of those who were there, but refused to understand.

Das Wesen - Embracing All, Vanishing All CD 13,99 euro (Label: Infrastition)

Inspired by performances in 1979 of numerous no-wave groups from New York (including Teenage Jesus & the Jerks) Hans Dekkers, Hans Hermes and Boudewijn van der Wagt started their own band, named Puber Kristus. After a while they indulged in 'unannounced-performances' and at the end of 1980 they renamed the band Das Wesen, also because their music had changed into the direction of new wave. They played regularly all over the country and due to their mesmerizing performances became very popular in Holland. Their first record 'Anyone' was released in 1982. Frans Oosterholt joined the group as a bassplayer and they went on to record 'Who Had a Heart' (1982) and 'Nocturne' (1983). The lyrics were written by both Boudewijn van der Wagt and Hans Dekkers, both of them were the lead singers of the band. Hans Dekkers composed most of the music. At the end of 1983 the band split up.
The passing away of Boudewijn van der Wagt in 1999 was a heavy shock to his friends and acquaintances. This cd is dedicated to the remembrance of this flamboyant and inspiring person.

Cult minimal wave duo, re-released on the belgian label Daft Records run by Dirk Ivens. Later in 1981, JEFF AND JANE were formed and released one EP 'World Trade' on Lust/Unlust records, and in '83 they released the album 'Flesh'(self-produced). The band performed in venues in Boston, New York and Philadephia. The music was electro-pop employing early Roland synths and the TR808 drum machine.

Ian North - My Girlfriend's Dead CD 11,99€ (Label: Cherry Red)

My Girlfriend's Dead is a synth-pop masterpiece by Ian North, former guitarist and songwriter with Junkshop Bubbleglamsters Milk N' Cookies. Ian North was not only present at the birth of the New York punk scene - playing CBGB's shows with The New York Dolls, The Ramones and Talking Heads, among many others, with Milk N' Cookies - but also played in London with Neo at the time of the English Punk explosion. Returning to New York in the late 70s - and heavily influenced by Kraftwerk - Ian decided to utilise the now affordable synth technology and recording equipment to record My Girlfriend's Dead in his apartment in Brooklyn. At its time of the release of My Girlfriend's Dead there were only a handful of other artists such as John Fox, OMD, The Human League and The Normal who were working in the same field of electronic music. This album is a true pioneering synth-pop gem.

In the late spring of 1982 an electro-pop band from Canada calling themselves land of giants released an independent 12" single called Cannibal Dolls / Seven Men. land of giants featured the talents of Henryck Jesiak, John Tucker, Anya Varda and Marc Wonnacott. The single went on to receive respectable radio play on college radio (where it reached #1) and on alternative radio stations. John Peel even played it on his BBC show, according to a friend who phoned me long distance from a call box in the UK the night he heard it. After it’s initial success as a dance floor hit, it has garnered a small but extremely loyal following around the world. Over the years we have had requests from fans for a CD and for more songs. There were a number of demo recordings made between 1982 and 1985 that were never released. The long awaited land of giants CD, cannibal dolls/seven men is now available!

L’Enfance Eternelle was born in November 83. The story starts quite fastly as a gig is found before the first note to be played. September 85 sees a second TV on FR3, then come the recording of a new 4 track demo tape, issued to 500 copies and quickly sold out. On May 17 1986 a gig at La Bourse Du travail in Lyon with the band Gestalt is recorded, to be the first album. 1200 peoples attend to theis Jour des Fous. From September to December 1988 the second album is recored, La Terre des Innocents. The release party accored at le Truck in front of 1200 persons for a party together with their old chaps Opéra de Nuit on April 15 1989. The last demo, never finished is the end of the band in December 1990. Bertrand “Cheap” goes on with Bob's Your Uncle and The Camelia Street Blury Experiment in Paris. Fabrice Della-Malva and Jérôme “Dien” Bideaux make an hardcore band: Garlic Frog Diet. Christophe Neau goes for jazz rap with Lex Léo. Pat aka DJ Pee found his own band Le Peuple de l’Herbe, his brother Kriss doing the sound for concerts with the succes we know. Marquis opens a trendy piercing shop on Lyon. Franck “Kreppux” goes on with theatre and chanson. Pascal “Bô Mouton” Prenez band’s photographer becomes a syndicalist. Jérôme Margotton founds the acid jazz band Mo’ Jazz Beats, and then mOko (www.moko.fr). Concerned with melody, synth textures, moody cinematic and theatrical ambience (Minox also composed for the theater), and an avant-garde tendency to mix genres, Minox is difficult to categorize. 'Lazare' includes both solo piano pieces ("Theme for Two") and complex compositions ("Suite Maniacal"), and should appeal to fans of `80s synth bands as well as those of minimal yet artfully balanced soundscapes.

This reissue of the Swiss early 80's minimal wave band Mittageisen features the classic Mittageisen-LP from 1983 (incl. "Wir") as well as the Automaten-12" from 1985 plus 6 previously unreleased bonus tracks. Mittageisen is one of the earliest darkwave/electro Goth bands. Formed  in 2003 after countless members change, they released their first cd-ep in 2006. in 2007 the second cd-ep "waiting for the circus" was released followed by gigs in spain, france, switzerland, romania and italy. In june 2009 the debut LP/CD "say hello to artificial grey" was released on the two leipzig based labels majorlabel & sm musik (with positive feedback from worldwide underground-press.  A great example of modern postpunk.

Monuments - XXVII CD 14,99€ (Label: Anna Logue Records)

In 1984, the MONUMENTS, consisting of Andrea Costa and Mauro Tavella from Torino, Italy, released their only official record, a mini LP called “Age” comprising six incredibly fantastic electropop tracks. Anna ever thought of this mini LP as being the best electropop record ever coming out of Italy. Unfortunately, the duo didn’t make it any further under the name of MONUMENTS, though even to this very day they follow their careers as composers, studio owners and explorers of electronic music. Anyway, the MONUMENTS were already formed in 1981 and a couple of demos were recorded which never saw the light of day, but were only given to a few friends. Their nature is a bit more rough and never drift towards the more commercial Italo synth pop. So what you get on this CD is indeed an essential retrospective compilation album of one of Italy’s pioneering underground electronic music acts.And while Andrea and Mauro want to close this chapter with this release, a project entitled MONUMENTS II is maybe on its way … The limited pressing of 500 copies includes 11 previously unreleased tracks, the remastered version of their rare 1984 six track mini LP “Age” and a12 pages booklet with liner notes.

Moon Duo - Killing Time CD EP 12,99€ (Label: Sacred Bones Records)

Moon Duo is a project of Wooden Shjips guitarist and singer Ripley Johnson. Under the Moon Duo moniker, Johnson and collaborator Sanae Yamada create expansive Krautrock influenced tapestries of warm cascading fuzz and controlled feedback, organ, and accenting keyboard. This four song 12-inch is the second release and incorporates a much more concise, composed and driving sound than before. The Duo expand on ideas only hinted at on the Sick Thirst 12-inch (which is already long gone) adding a driving drum machine beat behind the thick walls of layered sound. Don’t sleep on this one.

The single "Nightshift" marked the beginning of their collaboration with Martin Hannett, the producer of Joy Division, with whom the band were to record an album ("Swimming") and two more singles ("Calcutta" and "The Astronaut").  The Names recently made their return on stage (during a Factory Night event at Plan K, in Brussels, in december of 2007.

Neutral Project has been created in 1984 by Yvon Million and Dominique Oudiou, two autodidacts musicians. Sad Lovers & Giants - Epic Garden Music CD Reissue 11,99 euro (Label: Cherry Red)

Sad Lovers and Giants originally formed in 1981 and produced ‘classy alternative pop music’, a psychedelic post punk sound. The guitars chimed above atmospheric keyboards held together by a rock solid rhythm section underpinning very accessible song writing and the strong haunting voice of singer Garce. Think Chameleons, early Cure and latterly bands like Interpol. After their initial split in 1984 interest in the band grew at home and abroad prompting them into reforming in the late 80’s and producing several more great albums but ‘Epic Garden Music’ is the starting point.

Second Layer - World Of Rubber CD 11,99 euro (Label: Cherry Red)

Second Layer featured Adrian Borland and Graham Bailey, founding members of The Sound . They pioneered the use of drum machines and mixed machine based soundscape with more human elements created a sound ahead of its time. After releasing a couple of singles in 1979 and 1980 they released World of Rubber on Cherry Red in 1981. A beautiful, hard and emotional record. It contained many of the same elements as The Sound , not much of a surprise considering the line up, but the machine element gives it a very different sound. Dirty Disco celebrates 30 years of Section 25, and features tracks from all line-ups and albums, as well as the singles Knew Noise, Dirty Disco, Haunted, Beating Heart, Looking From A Hilltop, Crazy Wisdom and Bad News Week, plus a new lounge version of Knew Noise. Formed in Blackpool, the band were initially mentored by Joy Division, and went on to record four albums with Factory Records between 1980 and 1986. SONNENBRANDT hails from Hamburg, Germany, was founded in 2003, and consists of Stefan Bornhorst (THE SILICON SCIENTIST, Dreams Encoded, The Convent – synthesisers, programming, vocoder), Jojo Brandt (Voll Wirksam, Liquid Dreams, The Convent – synthesisers, programming, guitars, lyrics, vocals) and his wife Sonja ‘Sonne’ Brandt (lyrics, vocals). They perform the perfect mixture of early 80’s Electropop and Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) – or “Elektronische Volksmusik” (electronic folk music) as they cutely describe it themselves - paired with German lyrics being entertaining in a funny way, and also as cross as two sticks. The tunes are very catchy, melodic though with some darker melancholic undertones. Also worth mentioning is a slight participation of Alain Seghir from MARTIN DUPONT as well as the guys from THE MARY ONETTES in “Rotes Telefon”. It includes also a cover version of LIO’s “Amoureux solitaires”!!!

Dead Scarlet Records released the first album "Lacrimae Christi" by the legendary Greek dark wave band South Of No North. Distributed via the Greek label Cyberdelia Records their first album, "Lacrimae Christi", comes remastered as a digipack CD. South Of No North were formed during November 1983 and were named after a Charles Bukowski’s book. They started as a four member band, strongly influenced by bands such as the Joy Division, Echo & the Bunnymen, Cure, The Sound, Clock DVA and most of all David Sylvian’s band, Japan. Originally released in 1981 as an untitled mini album on Zick Zack, "Dub & Die" completes our re-issue programme of the band's earliest works. Recorded at SADW's Cassettencombinat studio in Berlin, the original 8 tracks represent the first release by this German Avantgarde/Industrial group that was once a member of the "Geniale Dilettanten" movement. Again, comparison with early Einstürzende Neubauten is permitted, although Sprung were always more structured and song orientated than their friends. Stephan Eicher - Spielt Noise Boys CD 14,99 euro (Label: Born Bad)

The french label BORN BAD RECORDS has now re-issued the absolute(!) “Minimal-Synth” classic. Strangely enough the label claims this to be an “LP”, though it runs of 45rpm, also selling it at the same rate as their full-length LPs. Then again, no reason to complain, since you get more than enough value for money. In contrast to the legendary 7″ on swiss label OFF COURSE with 5 songs on it, this re-release contains all 7 songs from the original cassette-recordings from 1980. And most of all, what you get is fully capturing EVERYTHING that ever was and is good and great about the so-called Minimal-Synth genre. It never got any better than this. So with getting just this one record, you will experience as much knowlegde about this style of music, as any stupid nerd can do by collecting 1000′s of minimal-synth records. This brilliant record sums it all up! (And most probably Stephan Eicher didn’t even know that he invented a whole new genre, nor may he give a shit about it…)

Störung was brought to life in 1981 by two young individuals from Europe. Eugenius and Arian Brunwin gifted the eighties their unique style of experimental minimal wave. First released in 1982 as SG002, Clogsontronics has re-released the Störung album 'This Is Future'. The original mastertape still in perfect condition has been used for this re-release. Carefully some minor corrections were applied to make it sound like it should have compared to the original pressing. Clogsontronics presents this product in a new concept: a release both on vinyl and CD in one package. The buyer gets the art and analog feeling of the vinyl as well as the convenience and technical quality of the CD. For best results the vinyl was cut using the DMM cutting process and pressed on 180 grams vinyl. Also included in the package are 2 stickers similar to the ones the band used for promotion back in the old days. The release is limited to 700 hand number stamped copies (matched numbers for both vinyl and CD) with lyrics and credits on the inner sleeve.

Störung released this CD on Clogsontronics in June 2007. It contains two versions of a brain-draining track called 'INDUCTION - the Enochian Remix'. A minimal, industrial and electronic track recorded in 1999, edited and mastered in 2007. The CD also contains two previously unreleased tracks recorded live in 1983. These tracks reflect Störung's interpretation of the Cold War era: 'Warschau Pact' and 'Sovjets Don't Dance'. System 56 - Retrospective: 1982-84 CDr 14,99 euro (Label: Detour Records)


Long ago, and far away, in a decade known as the 80s, there once was a band from Cleveland called System 56. Most people in the northeast Ohio area would remember us from the generous  amount of local airplay that they received for songs like "Metro Metro”, “You’re Only Dreaming”, “Life On a Cool Curve” and “A Man Needs a Motor”. In all, they released three singles and a 12” EP, over the course of about three years. 
Now it’s about 20 years later, and they finally managed to get most of their original songs remastered onto one piece of plastic, entitled RETROSPECTIVE: 1982-84. Those who were around with them for the first time will hear all of the familiar radio favorites, along with three previously unreleased tracks, that have been sitting “in the can” lo these many years. These new tracks were all regular staples that they included in their live shows, feature the 1984 version of the band, and were recorded during the same studio sessions that produced our final single “A Man Needs a Motor”.

Therese Racket - Trâce De L'Ortie CD 13,99€ (Label: Infrastition) 

Therese Racket appeared in 1983 in Toulouse, lead by female singer Badou Ortega, creating poetic and weid atmospheres, with a sensual and deep voice (once compared to Siouxsie), contrasting with guitars and cold machines. Spoted during the Printemps de Bourges 1984, then 1985, the band is welcomed by professionals. Therese Racket then record a first track "Eurokéenne" in the Maison de la Culture in Bourges, then a first single "Rebelle" in 1986, followed by an album "Survie" in 1987 produced by Radio France, whom is exceprt their second single "Mau Mau". They made a lot of gigs, opening for bands as Xymox, Legendary Pink Dots, Sugarcubes, as well in France then in Spain or Austria. The band stopped in 1990 because of the disease of one of the composing member, on the way to record a second album produced by Strangler's Jean-Jacques Burnel.

Tilbury On Cloves - The Blind​Show CD Digipak 14,99€ (Label: Dead Scarlet Records)

Second full-lenght album for this Greek band. Having existed since 1994, Tilbury on Cloves never seemed to be a part of the Athens underground, as basically the latter does not even exist. Occassionally, Sigur Rós, Metrotone and Piano Magic, in addition to classic darkwavers such as Eyeless in Gaza and Chameleons UK (whom they have, in fact, played a concert with) have been mentioned in the same breath as Tilbury On Cloves. And indeed, the Tilbury sound is a mixture of 80s darkwave / electronica, and modern-day ethereal pop. Special digipak, limited edition.

TV21 - Snakes And Ladders, Almost Complete: 1980-82 CD 11,99 euro (Label: Cherry Red)

This is the first-ever retrospective of TV21, an acclaimed Scottish post-punk band at the dawn of the 1980s. Having recorded a couple of acclaimed singles on their own Powbeat label, they signed to the Deram label also home at the time to Mo-Dettes. Marcel Kanche, Phil Gaz and Bruno Tollard create Un Département in 1980. They are quickly adopted by the indie scene, the one of squats and Belleville's loft. Various - Expositions / Tribute To Charles de Goal CD 11,99€ (Label: Self-Control, Brouillard Définitif, Str8line Records)

"Expositions" is the name of the Tribute to Charles de Goal that has been release by Str8line in collaboration with the labels Self-Control and Brouillard Définitif. 21 French and international bands. Philipp Münch's The Rorschach Garden presents a fresh electroclash look on "Modem", the newbies of Andromax prove they can handle the catchy "Synchro", No Tears gives a (dark)wave-rock interpretation of "Retour au dancing" and Die Perlen could just a well release their cover of the fidgety "Hop hop hop hop" as a single. Together with Dirk Polak, the vocalist of the Dutch new wave band Mecano, Sophya performs a fine darkwave rendition of "Plus haut". "Atout mineur" by Le Jeune Extrême contains excerpts of Sabrina's bland hitsingle "Boys", not really a wise choice. The new wave veterans of Guerre Froide do a wonderful job with "Fermez la porte", Trouble Fait' adds a rocky post-punk touch to "Frederic". Martin Angor, the former guitarist of Lucie Cries, keeps the gloomy nature of "L'homme Pierre" intact and Viande Froide speed up "Missiles a&b" after launch. Only DC Shell has opted to use a recent Charles de Goal song, "Identité" appears on Charles de Goal's 2008 album Restructuration. "Envers/endroit" is a remarkable choice by the shadowy wave rockers of Dorcel. It was composed for Charles de Goal's album Révolution at the turn of the 80's but it took until 2005 before that song was issued. "Technicolor" is hailed twice. Hot Dog Addict remains close to the original by keeping the pace high, Sophya turns it into dreampop. Synapscape has the honour to have Patrick Blain himself on vocals when they present their interpretation of "Dans le labyrinthe". As an extra, three MP3 tracks are added; clinical, detached versions of "Frederic" by Femme Fatale and "L'homme Pierre" by Jungle Is Neutral vs EPK and an indie rock interpretation of "Exposition" by Denner.

When we had the original idea for this compilation some time in 2007, it was supposed to come out in the year of our 10th anniversary. But it wouldn't have been us if the project hadn't taken longer than expected! ;-) Our label was born in 1998 and the first release saw the light of day in 1999. So it is our 11th (or 12th?) anniversary this year. But what's so special about the 10th anyway? So who cares, it's 2010 and here is GENOTYPES!

Many of the tracks on this compilation are with us for more than 20 years and they have been giving us goose bumps ever since! So it was more than time to pay tribute to some classics. We are very happy to preserve these real gems of early synth and wave music and present most of them for the first time with the approval of the artists after their original release. It is lovely to have this little extract of the soundtrack of our lives. "Genotypes" is a bit of a present to ourselves and we hope you'll enjoy it too!

It's the story of a young girl in a state of rupture, somewhere in the countryside, in a kingdom. It's summer. She has to study for her exams. Gerda finds herself back at her uncle and aunt's house. She has not seen them for years, since her mother died.
It's 1985. There is a tape in the cassette deck, a flanger on the bass, and the rhythm box is heavy with reverb. It's a crisis. Gerda has to make some choices, choices which must lead her to see other horizons. Around her, convulsions: a time is ending.

Tracks from Troms¯ up North to Arendal in the South, tracks recorded as early as 1980 and up to 1988, tracks shorter than two minutes and longer than six, spanning dark wave, avant garde, synth pop and most genres in between; songs that were hits on Norwegian radio and songs that have been totally obscure for 20 years or more. Maskindans is an impressively broad and thorough presentation of the finest Norwegian '80s electronics.

Following an idea of Italian disco guru Fred Ventura to publish some recordings that have remained in the vaults for more than 25 years, and thanks to the skilful “mastering touch” of Giovanni Versari, we have fi nally realized what seemed like a dream: a representative and intense snapshot of the Milanese new wave scene of the early eighties, 20 tracks that recount the salient steps of the brief but intense career of four Milanese bands — from the post-punk of Other Side, to the oblique funk of State Of Art, to the evident Kraftwerk infl uences of La Maison, to the electro pop-wave of Jeunesse d’Ivoire — four bands that illustrate the mood of an underground scene that burned out rapidly, mostly due to the indifference of the media and recording industry during those years.

Minimal Wave: both a genre of underground DIY electronic music from North America and Europe in the late 1970s and 80s, and the name of the label devoted to unearthing these recordings. The Minimal Wave Tapes is the first official anthology (on CD, LP and digital) of Minimal Wave music from this label. Most of the songs were originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves, and only a handful of people knew about them. They’ve been remastered from their analog source tapes and compiled here by Minimal Wave's Veronica Vasicka and Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf.

The Minimal Wave musical genre was hallmarked by the use of the analog synths and drum machines manufactured in the 70s and 80s, and characterized by simple music structures made by musicians working in the early D.I.Y. asthetic: recording on tape in their home studios, creating their own album artwork, and often collaborating via postage mail. The fanzine CLEM (Contact List Of Electronic Musicians) was very influential in creating a worldwide community for this sort of music, before digital technology and the internet came into play.

During the 80s, the name and line-up changed regularly until 1988 by the name of ZURÜCK PLACENTA. ZURÜCK PLACENTA's music is a mix of powerfull Cold-wave and dark 80's gothic rock, with some industrial influences, and even Hard-Core... The band has a strong personnality and a sharp and heavy sound, obvious influences, but well inetrated...In a Post-Punk attitude (DIY), ZP will release a first demo in 1990, then the self-titled album in 1992, produced by Jean Taxis (Asylum Party, Babel 17, Complot Brünswick, Norma Loy…).ZP splited in late 1992, leaving behind them a unique and mythical album, which deserves its rank among the weird and cult temple of French Cold-Wave. The CD represents what was recorded in 1992 at Studio Val d'Orge with Jean Taxis but it never got released. Their singer is now playing in French Post/Punk band Frustration.

Xeno & Oaklander - Vigils CDr EP ltd ed 150 copies 9,99€ (Xanten) last copy

Debut EP from Xeno and Oaklander, recorded entirely live in one go on October 1st, 2006. 'Vigils' is now a classic document of the many multifaceted musical activities of Miss Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride(aka Martial Canterel). Uptempo cold, distant, echo-laden synthesizers and drum machines provide a spacious, melancholic backdrop for Miss Liz's complex ephemeral lyrical presence. These 8 trax are both intimately fragile and psychedelic suggesting an electronic equivalent of the British shoegaze bands while maintaining the wildly aggressive stripped-down DIY spirit of punk that informed the ideals of the originary wave of European minimal electronic bands. This second edition of 150 copies also contains the additional track 'Cold Forever', recorded in late 2005 which originally appeared on the Wierd Compilation(2006).

Wallenberg - Sea Of Sins CD 9,99 euro (Label: Manic Depression)

The second start for one of the most important bands in the French cold-wave scene, since Wallenberg revealed himself from 1984 to 1988 with many live records supporting Play Dead, Jad Wio, Neva and many more and several featuring on compilations, radio shows and TV appearances, which revealed them to the French audience, before a premature split, although an album was planned with EMI. Wallenbeg is back today with a new line up around Hervé (singer and co-composer) and the release of their first real album on Manic Depression Records in 2004. Their are currently working on a second album. Those 11 songs, which distil a nostalgic and dramatic atmosphere, are sometimes calm and quiet (« Welcome Home », « Why »), sometimes unrestrained and aggressive (« An Eye for an Eye », « Ode to Gilles ») and give this record a real personality, between Cold-Wave and Gothic Rock. We will note the featuring of Denis Bortek (Jad Wio) on « Hypnotic » which really deserves its name, and the featuring of Elsa (Tanit) on « If I was another Man ».
